The Decision Model - Benefits
Because The Decision Model enables one to seperate out and model independently of implementation technology the inherent structure of business logic there are several substantial benefits to IT and to the business.

From an It perspective some of the greatest benifits are with business process mangement and user requirements. From a business perspective the complexity of modelling, managing and deploying solutions for areas of the business that contains complex business logic such as regulatory and compliance are significantly reduced.

Simplification of Business Process Models
A typical process model contains a mixture of business logic and the sequencing of tasks. Figure 1 shows how business logic is typically embedded within process models today leading to complex process models that needs to be constantly changed to reflect changes in business logic. This causes business processes to lose agility.

Figure 2 shows the simplification that occurs to a process model when the business logic is extracted.

Figure 3 below show how the business logic is extracted and called from the process model using decision tasks. A decision task executes a decision model within a business rules engine and results are returned to the process and actions and subsequent taske are routed via a gateway within the process model.

Integration with Business and IT Domain Models
The Decision Model brings significant benefits by its integration with the following models:
  • Business Motivation Model
  • Business Requirements Model
  • Organisational Model
  • Glossary Semantics Models
  • Logical Data Models
  • Object Models
  • Process Models
  • SOA Component Models
  • Use cases and Test Case Models

By linking Decision Models with each of the above models enables the business logic associated with each domain model to be easily identified and seperately modelled which significantly increases the functionality of the domain models. Figure 4 shows that The Decision Model is central to the key domain models used within IT and Business.
